This paper presents the behaviour of firms running losses. The empirical analysis is based on primary data of manufacturers of agricultural machinery of Multan Division. Two approaches, Hysteresis and Layers of Techniques, are examined simultaneously. It is observed that manufacturers' decision to quit is not only dependent on their future expectations but also on the state of the firm's technology. We conclude that retrofitting, the sunk cost of capital and labour, demographic characteristics of the manufacturers and the age of firms have important bearing on such a decision. 1. INTRODUCTION
